Ginkgo Biloba - Herbal Support

Gingko Biloba is renowned as a living fossil, having remained unchanged for more than 200 million years, even surviving ice ages and mass extinctions. Individual trees can live for 2,000 years!

Its name comes from the Japanese Gingko – “Silver Apricot” for the appearance of its fruit – with Biloba for its two-lobed fan- or heart-shaped leaves.

It can grow up to 100 feet (30 metres) tall and is dioecious, which means that the trees cannot have both male and female flowers on a single tree but are either all-male or all-female. It is native to Japan and China, but is so adaptable that it is grown all around the world as an ornamental tree. It’s also commonly grown as a “street tree” for its ability to absorb and neutralise pollution in city air. Needless to say, those grown for use by herbalists are in plantations in the countryside away from polluted areas

Gingko Biloba seeds are reputed to smell foul when ripe, so it’s just as well that the parts used by herbalists are the leaves! These have been part of traditional Chinese herbal lore for a very long time indeed, the earliest record of their use being around 3000 BC. The Chinese herbalists named it the “plant of youth” for the properties they saw in it.
Gingko Biloba may help to maintain a healthy Circulation.

The leaves are harvested in summer while they are green. They are dried at a relatively low temperature to retain their active ingredients, and then powdered.
