Co-Enzyme Q10 or Ubiquinone (meaning 'everywhere') is a normal and essential component of the mitochondria. Hence the co-enzyme is essential for the health of all human tissues and organs.
It is a vitamin-like substance which is made in the body and can be found in some foods, but seems difficult to extract from them. A food supplement of CoQ10 may be useful to help ensure that there is an ample level of this important co-factor in the tissues at all times.
The mitochondria are the energy generators of the cells and the highest proportion are found in the cells that do the most work, notably in the liver, muscle tissue and the heart.
Leading scientists believe that CoQ10 is in effect a 'biochemical spark' that releases energy from food. CoQ10 is therefore involved when we exert physical energy.
Studies in the USA and Belgium have shown that the obese have lower levels of CoQ10 in their tissue cells than those who are slim, as do those taking cholesterol-lowering medication.
